The Russian Revolution

The February Revolution

By February of 1917, the combination of the long term and short term causes of the Revolution were at their height and people were fed up with the ineffectiveness of their government and the lack of food.

The problems culminated on February 23, 1917 which was International Woman's Day. Women stood in long lines to obtain insufficient amounts of bread for their families. On this day the women had simply had enough and they started a protest.

The workers quickly joined in with the women.

Soldiers were sent to put down the protesters. However, the soldiers shared in the burden of the women and workers. They were looking out at their families and friends. Many soldiers left the army and joined the protest. Shouts of, "Down with the Autocracy," could be heard as the group marched to the tsar's palace.

Nicholas II was forced to abdicated his throne. He abdicated for Alexis as well. Nicholas II's brother Michael also chose to give up his right to the throne. This left Russia without a government. The Romanov dynasty had come to an end.
